Despite what you might think, there's more to the Canary Islands than sun, sand and sea. There's also plenty of quirks associated with the destination, making it a unique choice for your beach holidays. One aspect that is well worth mentioning are the black sand beaches throughout Lanzarote in particular, which originates from the volcanic rock surrounding the area.
Another bizarre aspect of Lanzarote beaches is that some of them have sand imported from the Sahara desert. This is mainly found at the beaches of the main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca, which were made with the imported sand once tourism took off.
Before the developers got their hands on Tenerife, the island had a quaint seaside town vibe about it, and the beach at El Puertito allows you to travel back in time and experience this. The bay is one of the old-fashioned areas of the island, with whitewashed buildings, brightly coloured boats and pale gold sand. Playa de los Abriguitos features lovely little sand coves, perfect for sunning yourself before going for a splash in the tempting turquoise waters.
Other famous beaches are in Gran Canaria and are renowned for their nudist beaches that are mostly around the Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles regions. However, the volcanic landscape also boasts a rich history. On the north coast of Gran Canaria lies Cenobio de Valeron, which features a group of caves which are covered in volcanic lava. However, there are also loads of offers on bargain holidays to the Canary Islands that are available online.
So whether or not you've heard it before, it's fair to say that the Canaries isn't your average beach holiday destination, and provides plenty to do and see for the whole family, depending on your tastes and budget of course.
