Enjoy a Healthy Diet on Holiday

By Steve Alexander

When you're on holiday, it doesn't matter where you're going, as there are many ways to eat healthily. Just because you're away from home doesn't mean you have to stuff your face with junk food. Many hotel deals are available too so it's easier than ever to try tasty, yet healthy food on holiday.

With cuisine all about fresh, healthy ingredients, simply cooked and spiced, Morocco is a great choice if you're on the lookout for a healthy holiday, although there are still a few culinary pitfalls that dieters may wish to avoid. Even snails are healthily cooked here though - simmered in a broth flavoured with aniseed, liquorice root, thyme, mint, pepper and orange peel.

Resist the temptation to nibble on nuts when you're ordering an evening drink and opt for a few olives instead. Look out for main dishes based around chicken or vegetables rather than beef or lamb - it's an easy way to cut down on fat. Another tip is to fill up on the hot and cold salads that are served at the start of main meals, then enjoy a smaller portion of tasty, but sometimes fatty, tagine.

Traditional Moroccan etiquette dictates that food is eaten with the hands, using pieces of bread instead of knives and forks. However all this edible cutlery is packed with calories, so you may want to eat your meals the Western way! You'll soon develop a taste for delicious, refreshing mint tea, so enjoy it with your meals rather than alcohol or sugary soft drinks.

Malta is another great choice of holiday destination if you're watching your weight. The simple, rustic cuisine on the island is based around bold flavours and the fisherman's catch, so is naturally low in calories. Often used to encase savoury as well as sweet fillings, pastry is incredibly popular, so watch out for dishes such as lampuki, timpana and pastizzi. Try things like bragoli instead, which is parcels of mince, eggs, breadcrumbs and parsley encased in a thin sheet of beef. Or opt for stewed and stuffed protein-rich dishes like stuffed octopus, squid and cuttlefish served in a spicy tomato sauce.
